Opus Dei was founded in 1928 as a catholic organisation based in Rome. They now boast over 80,000 members in 60 countries. The Catholicism practised by Opus Dei members is a very strict reading of the gospels and scriptures and one of the major controversies surrounding the organisation is the belief by some that members practise corporal mortification (a form of self-inflicted torture).
